GST/Tax Calculator

Calculate taxes for invoicing and estimates

🧾
Overview: Calculate GST, VAT, or sales tax on any amount. Supports multiple tax components (e.g., CGST + SGST, federal + state). "Add Tax" computes the tax-inclusive price; "Remove Tax" extracts the base price from a tax-inclusive amount.
Best for: Creating invoices, verifying tax on receipts, quoting prices with/without tax, or estimating tax liability on purchases.

How to use the GST / Tax Calculator

Many quoted prices are tax-exclusive, others are tax-inclusive, and businesses need to split a single tax into federal and state components. This calculator handles all three: it can add tax to a base price, remove tax from an inclusive price, and split results by component such as CGST + SGST (India) or federal + state (US).

Step by step

Why it’s important

Tax mistakes compound. Under-charging a client means you pay tax from your margin; over-charging means you owe a refund. Businesses that issue quotes, invoices, or receipts need to get the split exactly right — especially when B2B clients claim input-tax credits.

Worked examples

Example 1 — Adding 18% GST to a $1,000 service. CGST @ 9% = $90, SGST @ 9% = $90. Total invoice $1,180.
Example 2 — Extracting US sales tax. A receipt shows $86.10 including 8.25% sales tax. Base = $86.10 ÷ 1.0825 = $79.54. Tax = $6.56.
Example 3 — Rounding gotcha. A 5% tax on $99.99 is $5.00 after rounding, even though the raw number is $4.9995. Always round at the final step, not at each intermediate step, to avoid invoice mismatches.

Common jurisdictions at a glance

In India, most services attract 18% GST (9% CGST + 9% SGST for intra-state, or 18% IGST for inter-state). In the UK, the standard VAT rate is 20%. Australia uses a flat 10% GST. US sales tax varies by state and city and typically sits between 0% and 9.25%. Always verify with your latest official rate sheet — rates change every budget cycle.

Check your jurisdiction’s rounding rules and invoice format before sending the document to a client. Some regimes require showing tax per line item, others allow a single summary line at the foot of the invoice.

Real-life scenario: freelancer invoicing & tax-inclusive pricing

A freelance consultant in Mumbai issues a ₹50,000 invoice to a corporate client. At 18% GST the invoice must display ₹4,500 CGST and ₹4,500 SGST separately so the client can claim input-tax credit. Getting the split wrong delays payment by weeks and often forces an invoice revision — this calculator generates the correct breakdown in one click, ready to paste into the quote.

On the other side, a restaurant owner pricing a ₹500 menu item that must be tax-inclusive uses the “extract tax” direction to show ₹423.73 base and ₹76.27 tax for internal accounting. In both cases, the tool eliminates the quiet math errors that slip into hand-typed invoices and cause reconciliation headaches at month-end.

How the math works: add-tax vs. extract-tax arithmetic

There are two tax directions, each with its own formula.

Add tax (tax-exclusive base → gross):

Tax = Base × (Rate / 100) and Gross = Base + Tax

Extract tax (tax-inclusive gross → base):

Base = Gross / (1 + Rate / 100) and Tax = Gross − Base

In India’s GST system the tax usually splits equally between CGST (Central GST) and SGST (State GST) for intra-state sales, or falls entirely under IGST (Integrated GST) for inter-state sales. A single 18% rate therefore displays as 9% CGST + 9% SGST on a local invoice, but as 18% IGST on an inter-state invoice — the total is identical; only the allocation changes.

Worked example. A consultant issues a ₹50,000 invoice at 18% GST for a same-state client. Tax = 50000 × 0.18 = ₹9,000, split as ₹4,500 CGST + ₹4,500 SGST. Gross = ₹59,000. If instead the consultant wants to quote a ₹50,000 tax-inclusive flat price, the extract direction gives base = 50000 / 1.18 ≈ ₹42,373 and tax ≈ ₹7,627. This distinction matters: undercollecting tax on a tax-inclusive quote comes directly out of the consultant’s margin.

Frequently asked questions

What are the common GST slabs in India?

The mainstream slabs are 0%, 5%, 12%, 18%, and 28%. Essentials like fresh produce and education are 0%; most services sit at 18%; luxury items and sin goods land at 28% (sometimes with an additional cess). Always verify the slab for your HSN/SAC code before issuing an invoice.

What is the difference between CGST, SGST, and IGST?

CGST (Central) and SGST (State) apply together for intra-state sales at half the slab rate each. IGST applies at the full rate for inter-state sales and is later split between centre and state. From a buyer’s point of view the total tax is identical; the difference is purely about which government receives which portion.

Is this calculator suitable for VAT outside India?

Yes — the math is identical. Enter the applicable VAT/sales-tax percentage (20% for UK VAT, 7% for US state sales tax, etc.) and the calculator will add or extract the tax correctly. The CGST/SGST breakdown is an India-specific display layer and can simply be ignored for other jurisdictions.

Why does rounding sometimes change the invoice total by ₹0.01?

Tax amounts are rounded to two decimals before the invoice total is computed. Splitting across CGST and SGST can occasionally introduce a ±₹0.01 discrepancy. Most accounting software silently adjusts the smaller of CGST/SGST by one paisa to keep the total clean — the calculator does the same.
